Quick answer
A hub bearing puller removes a suitable bearing from a hub or freehub body. A disc brake mount facing tool resurfaces a suitable frame or fork mounting face. A brake piston press works at the caliper. These address different parts of the bike; choosing a tool does not substitute for diagnosing a problem.
Match the tool to the part
| Task to investigate | Tool category | Required checks |
|---|---|---|
| Remove an accessible hub/freehub bearing | Bearing puller | Bearing opening, access, collet fit and support clearance |
| Resurface an appropriate frame/fork brake mount | Brake mount facing tool | Mount standard, axle/dropout arrangement and manufacturer permission |
| Service suitable hydraulic caliper pistons | Piston press | Caliper access, piston design and approved service method |
When a hub bearing puller is relevant
VELYN's bicycle hub and freehub bearing puller kit lists 12–15 mm and 17–20 mm collet ranges. Compare the bearing opening with the stated range, then check access and support clearance. A listed range does not establish compatibility with every hub.
Do not select an extractor by wheel size or axle diameter alone. The bearing opening and surrounding construction determine whether the tool can engage appropriately. Consult the hub manufacturer's service information.
When brake mount facing is relevant
The disc brake mount facing tool kit is intended for suitable frame and fork caliper mounts. Facing changes the mounting surface, so mount standard and permitted service method must be confirmed. This precision task is for an experienced mechanic.
For background, see Park Tool's disc brake mount facing instructions. They describe its tool and do not establish interchangeability with the VELYN kit.
When a piston press is relevant
The ALLTOO hydraulic brake piston press tool is a separate caliper-service accessory. It does not remove a bearing or face a brake mount. Confirm tool shape and caliper requirements; not every piston design accepts the same tool.
Rotor rub alone is not enough to choose a facing tool or piston press. Have the brake problem assessed before removing material or forcing a component. Use actual component and tool instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Can a bearing puller fix rotor rub?
It serves bearing extraction, not brake alignment or caliper service.
Will a facing tool work on every frame?
No. Mount type, tool setup and service requirements need to match.
Is this a repair procedure?
This is a tool-selection guide. Obtain the instructions for your components and tools before precision or brake work.
